Cass Co., MO – Semi-Truck Crash on I-49 at MM 165.8, Injuries

Cass County, MO (February 23, 2025) – Emergency crews were dispatched to a serious collision on Interstate 49 northbound at mile marker 165.8 early on Thursday morning, February 20. The accident, involving two semi-trucks, occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. and resulted in injuries to one of the drivers.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened when a 2025 Kenworth 310, traveling northbound, struck the rear of a towed unit attached to a 2017 International truck-tractor. The impact caused the Kenworth’s cab to separate from the chassis, roll over, and come to a stop in the median. The towed unit detached and came to rest in the roadway, blocking both lanes of traffic. Meanwhile, the International truck came to a controlled stop on the shoulder.

Emergency responders, including the Cass County Sheriff’s Department and multiple state troopers, arrived at the scene to assist. The 34-year-old driver of the Kenworth, a Clinton, Missouri, resident, sustained moderate injuries and was transported by West Peculiar Fire to Belton Regional Hospital for treatment. The 58-year-old driver of the International truck, from Jarrell, Texas, was unharmed and remained at the scene.

Authorities worked to clear the wreckage and reopen the highway, as the blocked lanes caused significant traffic delays. The Kenworth was towed from the scene, while the International truck was able to be driven away.

Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for a speedy and complete recovery.

Truck Accidents in Missouri

Cass County, MO – Semi-Truck Crash on I-49 Leaves One InjuredMissouri’s highways see a substantial number of commercial truck accidents each year. According to data from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, large trucks are involved in thousands of crashes annually, many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Given the size and weight of commercial vehicles, these accidents often lead to extensive damage and prolonged road closures.

Crashes involving large trucks are influenced by several key factors, including:

  • Rear-End Collisions – These accidents often occur due to following too closely, distracted driving, or sudden traffic slowdowns. The sheer weight of semi-trucks makes stopping quickly much harder, increasing the likelihood of severe crashes.
  • Jackknife Accidents – A truck may jackknife if the cab and trailer fold at an acute angle, often due to sudden braking, slippery roads, or driver overcorrection. These accidents can lead to multi-vehicle pileups.
  • Cargo Shifts and Spills – Improperly secured cargo can shift unexpectedly, causing trucks to become unstable or lose control. In some cases, hazardous materials may spill onto the roadway, creating additional dangers for other motorists.
  • Driver Fatigue – Truck drivers often work long hours, sometimes beyond the legal limit, leading to exhaustion and reduced reaction times. Fatigue is a major contributor to highway crashes and can be as dangerous as impaired driving.
